I love King David’s. I’ve been going to their Fairmount location in Syracuse for a while now and had their viral crispy shawarma wrap, so when I found out they had it at The Fair, I had to stop by.
King David’s has been selling at The Fair every year for the last 25 years! I don’t know if that’s a record, but it’s got to be close. Just imagine that: 25 straight years of bringing their food from Syracuse to the masses. They run a detailed, solid operation, and the staff seem genuinely happy to be there.
In their viral crispy shawarma wrap, they cut open a pita wrap and layer in a base of french fries, sliced lamb, lettuce, tomatoes and red onions, then roll it into a tube shape. It goes onto a hot flat top, gets completely covered in a red pepper sauce and gets seared on all sides. When it’s done, they top it with tzatziki.
What you get is a crispy, spiced outside that gives way to a hearty, delicious, meaty inside — the spiced lamb, the heartiness of the french fries, the crispness of the lettuce, tomatoes and onions, and the coolness of the tzatziki.
It might be the perfect food to eat at The Fair.
They wrap foil and paper around the bottom half, hitting that balance of a generous portion without being so oversized that it spills everywhere and makes a mess.
I love eating all the fun, over-the-top foods at The Fair, but one of the things I hate most is getting it all over my face, hands and shirt. What I love about this wrap is that you can walk around and eat it one-handed without looking like George Costanza eating an ice cream sundae.
