If you remember Lemoyne Manor in Liverpool from back in the day, you might be surprised to hear it’s now an apartment complex. And in the lobby of one of those buildings sits 86 Cafe, the first business to open there.

I first stopped in around their opening and tried their desserts and some very fun ice cream creations. This time they invited me back for something new: wonton soup and egg rolls.

I know. Wonton soup and egg rolls don’t sound like headline news. But at 86 Cafe, there are no shortcuts. Almost everything is made by hand right in the restaurant, and you can taste it.

The wonton soup

Every wonton is folded by hand and stuffed full of pork and shrimp. They float in a clear broth finished with toasted sesame oil, which gives it a rich flavor and just enough fat to coat your mouth with every spoonful. Add dried baby shrimp, seaweed and scallions, and it’s a bowl I’d go back for on its own.

The egg roll

It looks almost like a fried spring roll, with a smooth wrapper that shatters when you bite in. Inside it’s packed with pork, carrots, vegetables and ginger. It comes with sweet chili sauce for dipping.

The surprise: tiramisu

I didn’t expect tiramisu on the menu. It came out as an almost geometrically perfect square, and it was creamy, light and airy, with a little bite left in the ladyfingers and the espresso coming right through.

Whether you’re going solo for a bowl of wonton soup or bringing the kids for ice cream and dessert, put 86 Cafe on your list soon.
