I’ve known about Kindred Fare in Geneva for a long time.
It’s one of those places people mention with a certain tone — like you should already know how good it is.
And somehow… I had never been.
Until now.
They were kind enough to let me come in early before dinner service on a Friday night so I could try some food and still make it home for family time. Walking in without a packed dining room buzzing yet gave me a chance to really take the place in.
Kindred Fare is beautiful.
Modern rustic charm. Huge windows flooding the space with natural light. Wood, texture, warmth. A large bar sitting right in the center of the room, showcasing some seriously impressive bottles.
It feels intentional. Polished, but not stiff.
But here’s what surprised me.
The Dish They Can’t Take Off the Menu
I was back in the kitchen talking with the chef, and he mentioned something that stuck with me.
The Kindred Kale Salad.
Apparently, they tried swapping it off the menu once.
The customers almost revolted.
That’s when you know something isn’t just a menu item – it’s part of the restaurant’s identity.
And here’s the funny part.
Before arriving at Kindred Fare that day, I had already been to two BBQ joints and a local coffee shop where I tried a massive breakfast burrito.
By the time I sat down, a kale salad sounded heavenly.
The Kindred Kale Salad
The menu describes it simply:
Pickled red onions, bacon, goat’s milk feta, focaccia croutons, buttermilk herb dressing – all on a bed of kale.
But what makes it great is the balance.
The acidity from the pickled onions.
The salt and smokiness from the bacon.
The creaminess of the goat’s milk feta.
The crunch of the focaccia croutons.
And kale that actually has structure and bite – not limp, not overdressed.
It’s hearty without being heavy.
Fresh without being boring.
After a full day of brisket, ribs, and breakfast burritos, this salad was exactly what I wanted. It reset everything.
And I loved it.
Kindred Fare clearly does a lot well. The space is dialed in. The energy is right. The menu has depth.
But sometimes the dish that defines a restaurant isn’t the flashiest one.
Sometimes it’s the salad that customers refuse to let them remove.
If you’re heading to Geneva, Kindred Fare should absolutely be on your list.
And when you go?
Don’t skip the kale salad.
