Wrap n’ Roll is a local food truck here in the area that’s been operating for a few years. I can’t say I’d ever had the pleasure of trying their food — nothing against them, I just never had the opportunity.
But the owner reached out to me just before The Fair started and told me he was bringing a new item this year. He said it was based on his favorite food and his childhood memories, and that he really wanted me to come try it. So, I decided to oblige and stopped down to see him on day one to give it a shot.
It’s simple, and it’s delicious.
There’s nothing uniquely special about it — and I don’t mean that as a slight to the food. I just mean it’s so simple that he doesn’t have to do much to it to make it incredible. Honestly, I don’t think a lot of things like this need to be messed with too much.
I mean, it’s an Apple Pie Burrito. Or maybe it’s a wrap? Whatever you want to call it, it’s delicious.
They start by taking a large flour tortilla — and before you ask, yes, they do have gluten-free options available — and heating it up on their press. Then, they load it up with Apple Pie filling, and they don’t skimp on it either.
They add Cinnamon Sauce and a sweet glaze, wrap the whole thing up and put it in the panini press until it’s golden and crisp on both sides. Then it gets cut in half, served with a side of caramel applesauce and dusted with powdered sugar.
Yes, it’s every bit as delicious as you’d think.
It’s essentially an Apple Pie wrapped in a tortilla. You get warm apples, Cinnamon, Caramel and that crispy tortilla all in one bite.
I mean, how can you go wrong with an Apple Pie Burrito while you’re walking around the New York State Fair?
They could probably make it even better by adding a scoop of ice cream and handing you a fork, or maybe brushing the tortilla with butter and searing it on the flat top for a little extra buttery crispness. But honestly? It’s great just the way it is.
This is meant to be a dish you share — at least between two people, but realistically maybe four. It’s really sweet, and probably way too much sugar for one person to take on alone.
I had about three bites and I was full.
But every single bite was wonderful.
Wrap n’ Roll is located across from The Midway, on the side of the Expo Center at the Great New York State Fair.
Get out there and give them a try. An apple pie wrapped inside a tortilla might sound a little silly, but that’s kind of what Fair food is supposed to be.
And this one happens to be really delicious.
