What a a wonderful world we live in to be able to eat frozen cheesecake on a stick.
The Purple Cow trailer (also known as Polar Bear Ice Cream) has been at the New York State Fair for at least the last three years, if memory serves. They’re located at the very beginning of the Midway, not too far from Villa Pizza Fritte. They’re easy to find because they have a purple cow outside the trailer as a photo op.
Anyway, they sell a variety of frozen treats, from frozen bananas to ice cream to frozen cheesecake on a stick.
It’s a hard trailer to miss, but despite walking by it plenty of times, I’d never stopped to make a video before. This year, though, I was inspired by watching videos from the Minnesota State Fair — which is also going on right now — and honestly, I was getting a little jealous. The Land of 10,000 Lakes has some pretty eccentric fair foods!
I kept seeing people posting about cheese curds, frozen bananas and all these quintessentially weird Fair foods, and I finally said, “I’m going to get that stuff tomorrow.” So the Purple Cow was my first stop on that mission.
They have a few flavors of frozen cheesecake, but I got the cookie butter. They take a slice of frozen cheesecake, put it on a stick, dip it into cookie butter they make from scratch, then roll it in crushed Biscoff cookies.
If your mouth is watering, it should be. This was delicious.
The cheesecake was the perfect texture — frozen enough to hold up, but soft enough to bite through easily. The cookie butter and Biscoff were exactly what you’d expect, just with cheesecake added.
This is an indulgence, and for some reason I don’t feel nearly as bad about eating frozen cheesecake dipped in cookie butter as I do about eating raw cookie dough. I wonder which one is actually more indulgent. Anyway, it made me happy just to get the cheesecake on a stick, try it, take a picture and check off that quintessential Fair treat.
I also got to meet the owner, who was gracious enough to comp the cheesecake for me. Turns out he grew up in Oneonta, and I’d been there not too long ago making videos.
This is one of the things I love most about The Fair — meeting vendors and workers, finding out where they’re from and finding common ground, which usually comes in the form of restaurant recommendations.
