There are a couple of things I really enjoy about The Fair each year, and one of them is running into the same vendors. As much as I enjoy seeing new vendors — especially the ones from outside the state doing different, interesting things — there’s something fun about seeing the same businesses come back year after year.
Saucy Sandwich is one of them.
I don’t know exactly how many years they’ve been coming to The Fair, but I remember them from last year inside The Eatery Building where I had their Chicken Caesar Cutlet sandwich — really good.
This year they’re back with some new sandwiches, and they’ve even expanded their operation to add a second location. That’s the kind of thing I love: seeing local businesses succeed at The Fair and come back to expand. They still have their spot inside The Eatery, but now they’ve also got a second location with a food truck and Italian ice stand.
I went to The Eatery location to try two sandwiches. It’s a mother-and-son team running the show, which makes their growth even more fun to see.
First up was the Chicken Cutlet Caprese: a crispy chicken cutlet on a toasted 8-inch sub roll, topped with sliced tomato, mozzarella, balsamic glaze, parmesan and arugula. The chicken cutlet is so crunchy and meaty — it’s a hearty sandwich, more than enough for one person and perfect for two to split alongside some curly fries or a blooming onion.
Crunchy, fresh and delicious.
The second sandwich was their Knuckle Sandwich — a chicken cutlet topped with shredded mozzarella, a generous portion of their vodka sauce, balsamic glaze, roasted red peppers and Parmesan, all on an 8-inch toasted sub roll. This was probably my favorite of the two.
It’s meaty, crunchy and hearty, but then you get the melted cheese and the acidity of the vodka sauce paired with the roasted red peppers and balsamic. Just a really good sandwich — fun to eat and definitely filling.
From there I walked down to their food truck, set up right next to the Spud Shack, where they sell the same sandwiches alongside an Italian ice stand. I tried their strawberry italian ice, lemon italian ice and a combo strawberry-and-blue-raspberry.
The lemon is perfect for a hot day at The Fair — soft, supple and it melts in your mouth with a strong hit of lemon. A great in-between-meals snack or just a refreshing break while you’re walking around.
I loved visiting Saucy Sandwich again this year and seeing how they’ve grown. I highly recommend checking them out — wonderful food from a local business at the Great New York State Fair.
