There are certain dishes that instantly tell you whether a kitchen actually cares.
French onion soup is one of them.
You can’t fake it. It’s either rich, balanced, and deeply savory… or it’s salty broth with soggy bread and cheese.
And Angry Goat Pub absolutely nails it.
The French Onion Soup (This Is the Move)
I’m not exaggerating when I say this might be my favorite French onion soup in New York.
First – the thyme.
They don’t just hint at it. They use a real amount of it. You taste that herbaceous backbone in every spoonful. It cuts through the richness and makes the broth feel layered instead of heavy.
Second – and this is what separates it – they use a goat cheese grilled cheese instead of a traditional crustini.
Read that again.
Instead of the standard soggy bread floating under melted cheese, you get a perfectly toasted grilled cheese sandwich made with goat cheese sitting right on top. The tang from the goat cheese plays off the sweetness of the caramelized onions in a way that just works.
It’s thoughtful. It’s intentional. And it’s better.
If you go, order it. Don’t debate it.
The Burger Deserves Respect Too
The burger is exactly what you want from a pub that knows what it’s doing.
Good sear. Properly seasoned. Balanced toppings and the caramelized onions and the goat cheese just send it over the top.
It’s the kind of burger you order thinking “this will be solid,” and then halfway through you realize it’s actually really good.
Garlic Parmesan Onion Rings (Yes, Please)
You know how onion rings are either great or a greasy regret?
These are not a regret. Crispy onion rings with garlic, parmesan cheese? Yes please.
The House-Made Ice Cream Is the Sneaky Star
Now, here’s where Angry Goat separates itself.
They make their ice cream in-house.
I had the chocolate and raspberry cheesecake flavor – and it wasn’t just some swirl from a distributor. The ice cream maker makes the raspberry jam from scratch.
That detail matters.
The raspberry has real brightness and texture. The chocolate is rich. The cheesecake element actually tastes like cheesecake. It’s not just a flavor name, it’s built.
Ending a pub meal with house-made ice cream like that is not something you expect. But it’s something you remember.
Angry Goat Pub feels like a place that cares about the details. The thyme in the soup. The goat cheese twist. The scratch-made jam. The proper burger sear.
Those little things add up. And when they add up, you notice.
If you’re heading there, start with the French onion soup. Then build from there.
Trust me.
